If you’re not a big fan of the word “Self-Awareness,” you’re most likely not the target audience for this post. Well, I’ve found that’s not true and you can find plenty of people who are self-aware.
The term Self-Awareness is often related to Self-Esteem which is a more broad concept. Self-Esteem itself is usually defined as the ability to feel good about yourself without having to take a lot of self-responsibility (ie. doing things for yourself). In fact, it is an attitude about oneself that can be developed through self-awareness.
This is the part where I normally go all psycho-ed. Self-Esteem is usually defined as a positive attitude about oneself. But the word Self-Awareness is actually a very broad meaning of the word. The word itself is a combination of several words that can be used to mean ‘self-confidence’. This is because the word Self-Awareness implies that you feel good about yourself without taking a lot of self-responsibility.
For example, I can be totally comfortable about my weight and don’t really care what others think about it. But I wouldn’t call myself confident about it. I can be totally confident that my wife loves me, but I would not call myself self-confident about that. The same goes for myself.
The whole point of self-awareness is to know who you are, what you are, and how you feel about yourself. And that takes a lot of self-responsibility. So if you want to be confident in yourself but you don’t want to admit that you are comfortable with your weight, you are going to need to be more self-aware than that.
In the same way that you can’t be confident in a lot of things about yourself without first admitting that you are afraid that you might be a bit overweight. That doesn’t mean you cant eat! The point is that you can’t be self-aware about everything you do without acknowledging that you might have some fear of something that is happening or that might happen to you.
