You can also tell the router to allow all traffic to go directly to a server, or to a specific IP address, or to a specific port, etc.
Config nat allows you to set up your router to allow a specific data connection, such as the FTP connection to a FTP server.
Now, there are many reasons you might want to configure your router to allow a certain type of server to connect to your server, but config nat is a nice way to do this. What is nice about it is that you can set up your router to allow any connection to your server to go directly to a specific server.
