The History of the Semicolon: Why We Have It

The semicolon is one of the most underused punctuation marks in modern writing. It’s also one of the oldest! The semicolon was invented by a man named Aldus Manutius in 1501, and it was used to separate different clauses on a page. In fact, this symbol has been around for over 500 years! But why do we even have that lever?

The semicolon is often used to separate two closely related sentences, but it can also be used in a list when items are long or complex. The semicolon is the perfect symbol for that! It’s not just an old-fashioned piece of punctuation; it serves its purpose and separates things beautifully. But why do we even have that lever?

So why don’t you take some time today to give your eyes a break from staring at those pesky commas and periods by picking up this cool little dot called the semicolon. You’ll find yourself using it more than you think, and before you know it, everyone will want one too! And then maybe someday they’ll invent something new instead we can only hope!

How many of us really use the comma, period, colon, semi-colon in our day-to day writing enough to remember when to use them correctly? Probably not many. And why should we bother with punctuation anyway – does anyone care if someone writes ‘I am going,’ ‘I am going,’ or ‘I’m going’?”

-What’s the point of using a semi colon if ‘I’m going’ and ‘I am going’ are both considered correct without it?

-Do you remember what happens when you mix up your periods, commas, semicolons in your writing incorrectly? You’re committing all sorts of errors. I know – I just did it on this very sentence! And how many times has someone done something like this to me before now!? It drives me crazy!! When will people learn?!

Please take some time out to give yourself a break from those pesky little dots called the comma or period by picking up an item with two of them: The Semicolon. We need to start giving the semicolon some love again.

It’s time to fatten up that semicolon, and give it some respect.
